Wheeling Central Keeps Rolling

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Magnolia coach Dave Tallman didn’t hesitate to say what he thought about Wheeling Central — that it is the best boys’ basketball team in the state.

The Maroon Knights got back to business Saturday night in the Rotary Challenge as they scored 24 points in the first quarter and ran away with a 78-43 victory over the Blue Eagles at Magnolia High School.

“I think they might be the best team in the state of West Virginia, bar class. I really do,” Tallman said. “I watch a lot of AAA basketball. I’m not afraid of that quote at all. They are that talented.”

Owen Gainer and Brent Price were right back at it a night after solid performances in the Skip Prosser Classic against Linsly. Owen Gainer led the way for the Maroon Knights as he compiled 29 points hitting four shots from behind the arc.

Price finished with 25 points, 15 of which came in the opening frame. The senior also hit four 3-pointers, three of those coming in the first quarter making it known that he can hit the long ball on a regular basis.

“That’s something we talked to him a couple of years ago about,” Wheeling Central coach Mel Stephens said about Price’s 3-point shooting. “He’s always had that ability to really get the ball into the paint, get to the rim. But we told him as you go up, whether it’s your sophomore year, junior year or senior year, teams are going to scout you and if you can’t shoot it, they’re going to play off of you and take that drive away. He’s really worked hard on his perimeter shooting and it’s improved really drastically.”

The Maroon Knights hit a double-digit lead with 1:51 in the first quarter and never let the lead go below that as their high-power offense kept the Blue Eagles on their feet while the full court press by Wheeling Central has transitioned into some quick points, a press that Stephens team has really taken to heart.

“We feel like this year we got the guys out front on the press that can really turn people over,” Stephens said. If your getting the ball into half court and only have the court to go to score, you can put some points on the board pretty quick. Brent and Owen, both of them, their ability to get to the rim, along with shooting the perimeter shots, that’s a huge advantage for us.”

For the Blue Eagles, senior Leo Herrick continued put together a solid season. Herrick had a team-high 19 points for Magnolia while Jake Gamble tallied nine.
