Central, Park Advance to Semis of Girls Tournament; Magnolia Ousted

Patriots set to face Buckhannon-Upshur; Knights to Meet Tucker County

CHARLESTON — For the second season in a row, Wheeling Central and Wheeling Park have advanced to the semifinals of the West Virginia Girls State Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Wheeling Central advanced easily with a 78-47 romp of Trinity Christian. Taylor Duplaga led all scorers with 19 points, while Eden Gainer, Hannah White and Kaylee Reinbeau each netted 11.

Wheeling Central will play Tucker County at 11:15 a.m. today. The Maroon Knights handed the Mountain Lions their only loss this season.

Wheeling Park rallied from a 15-point third-quarter deficit to knock off George Washington, 59-49.

Wheeling Park trailed 38-23 before going on a 36-11 run to end the game. Kylie McKennen paced Park with 20 points, while Bella Abernathy scored 19. Laurel Robb had 13 rebounds.

Wheeling Park faces top-seed Buckhannon-Upshur at 5:30 p.m. today in a rematch of last season’s semifinal victory by the Buccaneers. Park lost to B-U earlier this season.

It wasn’t all good news for Ohio Valley teams.

In its first appearance in Charleston since 2007, Magnolia was defeated by Tucker County, 66-35. Mady Winters paced the Blue Eagles with 16 points and Kyndra Pilant netted a double-double with 14 points and 22 rebounds.
