John Marshall Repeats With Victory Vs. Central

MOUNDSVILLE — The John Marshall and Wheeling Central softball teams have proven they are two of the best in the Ohio Valley. Friday night, the Monarchs and Maroon Knights squared off and the crowd got a championship-caliber game between the two juggernauts.

John Marshall was sparked by a two-run home run by Maddy Mayle and was able to get out of some tough jams in the field on a couple of Wheeling Central base-running miscues in a 5-3 victory at Lisa’s Field at I-470 ballparks.

“It was two real good high school softball teams and both playing very well,” John Marshall coach Ed West said. “I was really pleased with our girls in how they played. Central’s a good team. I was pleased with our defense, we made some good defensive plays, Carli (Lightner) pitched a really nice game and we hit the ball well enough to score five.”

The Maroon Knights were able to tie the score at 1-1 after an Olivia Carpenter home run in the bottom of second inning. However, the Monarchs responded the next time they went to the plate.

Lydia Knutsen led the top of the third off with a single followed by Lightner getting on base on an error. Knutsen then tried to give John Marshall the lead as she took off for home on a wild pitch. However, Riley Bennington was there at the plate to tag her out.

Lauren Garcia, though, backed her teammate on the next pitch and brought home Lightner with a RBI single. Mayle, then gave the Monarchs a comfortable cushion as she crushed a two-run homer over the left-field fence to make the score 4-1.

“It’s tough to go out there inning after inning with a one-run lead or a tie game,” West said. “That puts a lot of pressure on everybody. To be able to score a couple there and get a little bit of a cushion there, maybe helped them relax a little bit.”

The Monarchs increased the lead as they scored one more run in the top of the fourth as Knutsen was able to plate Kameryn Skrzyneki for a 5-1 advantage.

Wheeling Central managed to get a run across in the bottom half of the fourth. Maria Murphy belted a double to score Carpenter, who got on base with a single. Abby Davidson then stepped to the plate and followed through with a single. The Monarchs threw the ball home to force Murphy to stay at third and Davidson then took off as Mayle fired the ball to second base and Davidson was tagged out to end the inning. It was the first of a couple of base-running gaffes made by the Maroon Knights.

“There were a couple of miscues on the base paths,” Wheeling Central coach Buck Davidson said. “Probably a couple of miscues by me, you know bunting when I should have been getting a sac fly to get an extra run in. But I’m extremely proud of the girls. They played hard all the way up to the last out.”

Wheeling Central kept clawing at the deficit in the sixth. Bennington led off with a single. Kaitlin Ferns followed with a hard grounder that got through the legs of Abby Blake and also got behind Skrzyneki. Bennington was able to score to make it 5-3 after a Lightner wild pitch.

Emilee Ondrik came to the plate and put down a sacrifice bunt. As she was thrown out at first, Ferns tried to score. However, the throw was in time and Mayle tagged her out to end the inning.

“Our last three games have been really tough. We lost to JM, then we lost by run to St. C. and we had JM again (Friday). (Today) we get to go to Monroe Central,” Coach Davidson said. “Hopefully the girls are ready to play. If they keep up their enthusiasm, the way they were (Friday) and keep hitting the ball the way we were, they’re going to start falling and we’re going to score a lot of runs.”

Lightner went the distance for the Monarchs as she fired three strikeouts.

For the Maroon Knights, Bennington was able to overcome a rough start as she walked three batters in the first inning before ending with six strikeouts. Julia Padden belted a triple and Abby Davidson had two singles.
