Brunner Joining West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY — West Liberty University women’s basketball coach Kyle Cooper has added another talented transfer to his roster and this one comes with strong ties to the local area and the university community.

Morgan Brunner, a 5-foot-9 shooting guard who spent the last two seasons at NCAA Division I Youngstown State University, is the latest addition to the Hilltoppers roster.

A native of Wheeling and a graduate of The Linsly School, Brunner is no stranger to West Liberty. Her older brother, John-Michael, was a four-year standout on the WLU baseball team while her mother, Robin, has worked in the Hilltoppers’ athletic department for years.

“Morgan was obviously already very familiar with West Liberty,” Cooper said, “so we’re thrilled to be able to say she is truly part of the WLU women’s basketball family. With her skill set, Morgan definitely adds another major piece to our future on and off the court.”

Brunner made her presence felt quickly when she arrived at YSU two years ago, breaking into the starting lineup midway through her freshman season.

The sharpshooting guard posted four consecutive double-figure scoring games and was honored as the Horizon League’s Freshman of the Week after leading the Penguins to back-to-back wins against Illinois-Chicago and Valparaiso.

While injuries cut into her playing time for the remainder of her freshman year and most of her sophomore season, Brunner still managed to see action in 54 games during her two years at YSU. She has two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Hilltoppers.

“We have a long history of success with big shooting guards in this program,” Cooper said, “and Morgan certainly fits that mold. Not only will she allow us to stretch the floor even more, Morgan’s a physical player who has the ability to crash the boards and guard multiple positions. We’re pretty excited to add her to the mix.”

A four-year starter at Linsly who scored more than 1,200 points and drained more than 200 3-pointers during a stellar high school career with the Cadets, Brunner was a four-time All-OVAC selection and was picked to play in the Sam Mumley OVAC All-Star Classic.

Morgan is the daughter of Mike and Robin Brunner of Wheeling and will continue to pursue a major in Elementary Education.
