Sancomb Terminated as WJU Men’s Coach

Compiled 216-115 mark during his 11 seasons

Danny Sancomb

WHEELING — As the news began to spread Tuesday, it was met with shock and awe. Danny Sancomb was not immune to those feelings.

After leading the Wheeling Jesuit men’s basketball program to its first Mountain East Conference Tournament championship and another NCAA Tournament berth, Sancomb was surprisingly let go as coach at his alma mater.

The university didn’t have an official release. All that is being said at this point, came in the form of an email from Sports Information Director Chris Myers, which read ”Scholarships for current players and incoming students will be honored. The University will launch a search for a new coach soon.”

Under Sancomb’s direction, the Cardinals compiled a 216-115 record in 11 seasons, including four straight 20-win seasons, a No. 1 ranking in the country and a berth in the 2016-17 Atlantic Regional final where they were upended by eventual national runnerup Fairmont State. During that magical season, Sancomb was named NABC Atlantic Region and MEC Coach of the Year.

”I was terminated (Tuesday),” Sancomb said. ”It’s shocking and I am devastated.

”I’m sorry for being so vague, but I have been advised by my attorneys to not talk about it.”

Every player that played four seasons for Sancomb at Wheeling Jesuit, earned their degree.

Despite playing just two years at Wheeling Jesuit after transferring from Howard Community College, Sancomb is the program’s sixth-leading scorer with 1,454 points.

Sancomb was the West Virginia Conference’s leading scorer for two successive years, and was the NCAA’s leading DII scorer with 27.2 points per game. He was named MVP of the 1998 Cardinals and the Wendy’s Tip-Off Tournament. Sancomb was also named to the NABC/Chevrolet Division II All-American Team and the first team All-East Region.

Sancomb resides in Wheeling with his wife, Becky, the principal at Wheeling Central Catholic High School, and their sons, Eli, Luke and Jack.
