Yankees Stun Indians

NEW YORK (AP) — Gleyber Torres became the youngest Yankees player to hit a walkoff homer, a three-run shot in the ninth inning that gave New York a 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday for its 15th victory in 16 games.

At 21 years and 144 days, Torres bettered Mickey Mantle, who was 21 years and 185 days when he hit three-run, ninth-inning drive off Boston’s Ellis Kinder in a 6-3 win on April 23, 1953.

Domingo German pitched six hitless innings in his first major league start for the Yankees, who nonetheless fell behind 4-0 when Cleveland broke through against relievers Dellin Betances and Jonathan Holder. Yonder Alonso’s leadoff single against Betances in the eighth was the first hit for the Indians.

But after managing only one hit themselves against a stellar Mike Clevinger, the streaking Yankees fought right back to win their sixth straight and finish off a three-game sweep. New York also took the final three games of last year’s playoff series between the teams.

Clevinger went 7 1/3 innings in his first start against the Yankees, setting career highs with 10 strikeouts and 116 pitches. He issued two of his four walks in the eighth as New York rallied.

Short in the bullpen, Cleveland manager Terry Francona called on closer Cody Allen, looking for a five-out save. Allen gave up a two-out RBI single to Brett Gardner and a two-run double to Aaron Judge before retiring Gary Sanchez with two on.

Aaron Hicks and Neil Walker, who began the day batting .182, opened the ninth with consecutive doubles to tie it, chasing Allen (2-1). One out later, pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton was intentionally walked and Torres drove a full-count pitch from Dan Otero over the center-field fence.

Torres, who connected for his first big league homer Friday night, raised one arm and turned back toward the New York dugout after rounding first base. He was mobbed and doused by excited teammates at home plate.

Chasen Shreve (2-0) struck out two in a perfect ninth for the win.

The 15-1 stretch matches the Yankees’ best 16-game run since 1980.

After winning their ninth consecutive home game, next up is a Yankee Stadium showdown with the rival Red Sox for first place in the AL East. A three-game series between the top two teams in the majors begins Tuesday night.

Tyler Naquin’s RBI single and Francisco Lindor’s RBI double keyed Cleveland’s four-run burst in the eighth. The Indians also scored on Gary Sanchez’s sixth passed ball of the season and Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice fly.

Until the eighth, Hicks’ leadoff single in the fifth against Clevinger was the only hit in a scoreless game.

German was removed after 84 pitches, 23 more than his previous high this season, in relief Tuesday at Houston. The 25-year-old rookie, who stepped into the rotation for injured Jordan Montgomery, struck out nine and walked two.

Betances worked a 1-2-3 seventh before giving up three straight singles starting the eighth.

Red Sox 6, Rangers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Chris Sale struck out 12, J.D. Martinez homered again and the Boston Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers to maintain their AL East lead heading into a highly anticipated showdown at Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox hold a major league-best 25-9 record and a one-game lead over the Yankees. Boston and New York tangled earlier this season at Fenway Park, and the Yankees have won 15 of 16 overall entering this three-game set that begins Tuesday night.

Sandy Leon added a three-run homer for the Red Sox, who took three of four to start a 10-game road trip.

Blue Jays 2, Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Kevin Pillar scored the tiebreaking run on Alex Colome’s wild pitch in the ninth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays to stop a three-game losing streak.

Blue Jays shortstop Aledmys Diaz was carted off the field in the fifth inning after spraining his left ankle. Diaz drove in a run with an infield single to first baseman Brad Miller and hit the side of the base while trying to avoid a collision with pitcher Chris Archer, who was covering.

Twins 5, White Sox 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s James Shields pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Minnesota Twins rallied late for a victory over the White Sox.

With the Twins trailing 2-0, Eduardo Escobar broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single in the seventh. Eddie Rosario then followed with a single to drive in Brian Dozier, who led off the inning with a walk.

Shields, who retired the first 16 batters, got the next batter Robbie Grossman on a fly to center for the second out (with Escobar advancing to third) before being lifted after 91 pitches.

Royals 4, Tigers 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals won a series for the first time in 11 tries this season, beating the Detroit Tigers as Mike Moustakas drove in three runs with a double and sacrifice fly.

Kansas City took three of four from the Tigers. The Royals had lost nine previous series this year and split one.

Jakob Junis (4-2) improved to 3-0 against the Tigers this year and matched his career high with eight strikeouts. He allowed two runs and eight hits in seven-plus innings.

Athletics 2, Orioles 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Triggs allowed two hits over seven innings, Khris Davis and Matt Olson drove in runs and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat Baltimore and extend the Orioles’ losing streak to six games.

Pedro Alvarez put the Orioles ahead in the second inning with his seventh home run, a drive into the right-field bleachers. But he made a costly error at third base as the Orioles lost their 12th straight road game and dropped to 8-26, the worst record in the American League. Baltimore’s 26 errors are the second-highest total in the AL to 30 by Texas,

Angels 8, Mariners 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Shohei Ohtani returned from a sprained ankle and took a shutout into the seventh inning while outpitching Felix Hernandez, Mike Trout hit his 12th home run and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners.

Ohtani (3-1) made his first start on the mound since April 24. The two-way Japanese star looked to be completely in rhythm and showed no effects, striking out six.

Ohtani was able to keep the ball down in the strike zone against a Seattle lineup that typically hits well against fastball pitchers. And his breaking pitches left batters flailing.

INTERLEAGUE

Diamondbacks 3, Astros 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Matt Koch outpitched Justin Verlander to become the first pitcher to beat MVPs in consecutive starts in at least 71 years, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks to a victory over the Houston Astros.

Koch (2-0) outlasted Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in his previous start and faced Verlander to become the first pitcher since 1947 to face different MVPs in consecutive starts.

The Arizona right-hander gave up a solo homer to Alex Bregman in the second inning and escaped a jam in the sixth to get the MVP sweep.
