TORONTO — Cole Bodnar delivered three doubles and two RBI to lead Toronto Post 86 to a 7-4 victory over Wheeling Post 1 Thursday evening at the Knights Baseball Complex, snapping Wheeling’s nine-game win streak.

Wheeling opened the season with a loss to Morgantown, but Post 1 bounced back to win its next nine.

“We hit the ball well,” Toronto (5-3) assistant coach Greg Herrick said. “I am very proud of the way we hit.

“I can’t say enough about Sante (Carducci). The kid pitched his butt off. That is a very good team that we went up against. They have a good mix of kids from Wheeling Park, Wheeling Central and Linsly. They are always good competition. Any time you can be on the field against a team like that, it is going to make you better.”

Post 86 plated at least one run in each of the first five innings. Toronto was able to take advantage of a trio of Wheeling errors early on.

“Our errors hurt us big time, absoultely,” Wheeling (9-2) assistant coach Scott Castilow said. “We were not mentally prepared to play (Thursday). It was the little things that we have been preaching about. You are not going to win many games when you committ three errors.”

Carducci collected a complete-game victory for Toronto. He struck out two and walked two, while allowing four runs on 11 hits.

“I did not have my best stuff (Thursday),” Carducci said. “My guys had my back. They picked me up in the field and at the plate. We got some big hits in the game. I could not be more proud of these guys.”

Zach Hickman started and took the loss. He struck out three, walked two and allowed five runs on five hits in three innings of work.

“Our pitchers fared well,” Castilow said. “Pitching has been our strong suit all season. We did have some control issues, but they were nothing major.”

Bodnar led the way offensively for Post 86 as he doubled in his first three at-bats.

“Cole Bodnar had a heck of a day at the plate,” Herrick said. “He swung a big stick. We were able to give Sante some run support.”

Also for Post 86, Brandon Boyd delivered two singles and a RBI. Zac Gulczynski contributed an RBI single. Zac Berger recorded two singles. Isaac Schmitz also singled, and Kobe Herrick picked up an RBI.

Logan Wells led the way for Wheeling with two singles and a double.

Isaac Rine recorded two doubles while Bryce Bauer belted a solo home run.

“They can really hit the ball,” Carducci said. “I have not pitched against a team that can hit like that. I gave up that bomb. That wasn’t good, but I was able to keep my composure. I was able to get the next guy out, and that was a big swing in the momentum.”

Wells doubled to start the game, and he ended up scoring when Jacob Shia reached on an error with two outs. Shia ended up being thrown out on the bases to end the inning.

Post 86 came right back and plated a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Herrick reached on a one-out error, and he scored on a two-run double by Bodnar to tie the score at 1-1.

Toronto took the lead with a run in the second. Gulczynski walked to start the inning, and he scored when John Marelli reached on a two-out error to give Post 86 a 2-1 advantage.

Toronoto gained control of the game thanks to a three-run third. Gulczynski and Boyd each had an RBI single, and the third run scored on a throwing error as Boyd reached on an infield single, increasing Toronto’s advantage to 5-1.

“We started the game off slow,” Castilow said. “You can’t wait to the fifth or sixth inning and say, ‘Oh crap, we better get going.’ You can’t wait until its that late in the game. You have to be ready from the first pitch.”

Post 1 pulled within 5-2 in the fourth when Bauer belted a home run over the fence in left field.

Post 86 regained a three-run lead when Bodnar plated a run in the home half of the inning on his third double.

Wheeling tallied two runs in the fifth to pull within 6-4. The runs scored on an RBI single by Murray and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Thomas.

Toronto capped the scoring in the bottom of the inning when Herrick drew a bases-loaded to walk to make the score 7-4.

Both teams are scheduled to play Saturday. Wheeling is scheduled to host a doubleheader against Marietta starting at noon for its Alumni Day. Toronto is scheduled to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. out at Wayne County.
