TORONTO — Jefferson County Teramana Post 33 manager Anthony Pierro turned to veteran lefty Nicky Zorne to open his team’s run in the American Legion Region 7 Tournament Friday evening at the Knights Baseball Complex.

The Ashland University product gave him a gem, striking out 15 batters in 6 2/3 innings before his pitch count prevented him from facing the final batter, leading Post 33 to a 4-0 victory over the Conneaut-Cowle Post 151 Bruisers.

“We threw Nicky Zorne because that is our man,” Pierro said. “He came out and threw strikes. He commanded the zone.”î

Zorne struck out the side three times and battled back after getting behind early in counts all game long.

“He is a competitor,” Pierro said. “He is a kid who came back from college, and that is why we like him in these big games. He’s dealt with these moments his entire life and he lives for them.”î

Getting the win to open the tournament is something Pierro put a lot of importance on.

“We needed to get a win to start the tournament,î” Pierro said. “You never want to start it with a loss. We came out and got it. It’s a great overall team win.”î

Post 33 (20-18) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Michael Pierro walked, made his way to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error. Anthony Sinicropi, who singled with two outs, attempted to steal second base, and the ball was thrown away into the outfield.

That ended up being all Jefferson County needed with Zorne shutting down Post 151 (16-10).

Tristan Haught doubled and scored on Michael Pierroís RBI single in the third to make it 2-0.

That remained the score until the sixth inning when Haught put a ball in play with two outs and another Conneaut error allowed Gino Pierro and Connor Hyndman, both of whom singled with two outs, to score, making it 4-0.

“If we can score three, four or five runs, we have the pitching and defense to win ballgames,”î Anthony Pierro said. “(Friday) was a great example of that. We have experienced guys from all different schools that are buying in to what we are teaching, and I think it will go a long way in the tournament.î”

Zorne punched out the final batter he faced for strikeout No. 15. Michael Pierro entered and induced a pop up to end the game on the first batter he faced.

Post 33 is back in tournament action tonight at the Knights Baseball Complex at 7 p.m., facing the winner of the earlier match up between Toronto and Brilliant.

Conneaut will face Coshocton at 4 p.m. after falling to Toronto, 11-6, in the first game on Friday. The loser will be eliminated in the double-elimination tournament.
