Big Red Blanks Blue Dons, 3-0

WEIRTON — Steubenville girls’ soccer coach Jared Robinson challenged his team to control possession of the ball Wednesday evening.

It responded in dominant fashion.

Big Red controlled play from start to finish, en route to picking up a 3-0 victory over Madonna at the J.C. Williams Soccer Complex.

“We have really been working on possessing the ball and not just playing kick ball this year,” Robinson said. “Our girls are really starting to click with it. I feel like we had possession of the ball the majority of the time. The way that our girls are playing right now, it is just all coming together.

“Hats off to Madonna. They have small numbers, but they play with a lot of heart. Their defense was really tough.”

Three different players tallied goals for Robinson’s club, which is off to a 2-0 start.

“We have a really strong freshman class that is stepping up and mixing well with the upperclassmen,” Robinson said. “It’s just gelling. We definitely have options with the way that the girls come in and out. They pick right up where the other girls have left off. It’s a real momentum keeper.

Despite the loss, Madonna coach Bob Kolanko was happy with the improvement his team showed from Friday’s season-opening 6-2 loss to Wheeling Central.

“Every loss is a tough loss, but when I think back from where we were Friday to the progress we made (Wednesday), I am very proud with how they have improved.” Kalanko said. “I have six freshmen and eight girls that have never been on a soccer field before this season. With what they have done and the improvements that they are making, I will take it.

“Big Red has made some big strides. They have some players that make great shots, and they switch the field very well.”

After several near misses, Libby Saccoccia opened the scoring with a high shot from distance that went up and over Blue Dons (0-2) goalkeeper Abby Macek.

Macek made several saves before halftime to keep the deficit at one. Early in the second half, though, Steubenville was finally able to strike again when Jadyn Bennett corralled a ball in close and fired it into the back of the net. An assist went to Anastasia Crisante.

Moments after she had hit the crossbar with a long distance shot, Mary Marshall worked around Madonna defenders, shot back across the field and just inside the post to make it 3-0 and cap the scoring.

Macek, a sophomore, finished with 21 saves in the game, which impressed her coach.

“Our goalkeeper, Abby, was absolutely phenomenal,” Kolanko said. “Without her, it could have been nine or 10 to nothing. She made 21 saves, and they were some legitimate saves. They put some awesome shots on her, and she hung in there.”

Zoe Nocera made one save for Big Red to earn the shutout.

GAME NOTES

∫ Madonna assistant coach Sam Paletta was on the sidelines for the last time Wednesday, as he enters retirement.

“We’re going to miss him,” Kolanko said. “He meant a lot to these girls and put a lot of hours into the team.”
