Missed Opportunities Doom Shamrocks in Loss

BARNESVILLE — Converting on nearly every scoring chance against a high-caliber offensive football team is of the utmost importance.

Case in point was Friday night at Shamrock Stadium.

Barnesville drove into the red zone four times against Meadowbrook and came away without a point on any of those chances.

And those missed opportunities were too much to overcome against a talented Colts squad, which scored on three of its first four possessions and went on to post a 26-7 victory.

“It’s frustrating,” Barnesville coach Blake Allen said. “I am disappointed in the first half. We really looked like the young team from last season where we were overwhelmed by the moment.”

Barnesville settled down, scratched and clawed in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Not only did the Colts win the game and improve to 2-0, but they also retained the Bill Dowler Memorial Trophy, honoring a man who was the head coach at both schools and died in 1987.

Jeff Twiddy wasn’t necessarily pleased with the way his team played, but he will certainly take the victory, especially when you consider several members of his team were under the weather, battling strep throat.

“We have seven kids who are sick and three coaches, so we were just trying to keep guys healthy,” Twiddy said. “We had to keep throwing younger guys in because so many of our older guys are sick.”

While some of the Colts may have been under the weather, senior standout quarterback Davis Black — for the most part — appeared to be in tip-top shape. Talented junior tailback Timmy Ferguson as well as Addy Black and Boston Black all had big games for the Colts.

Ferguson got the scoring the started for the Colts. After holding Barnesville on downs in the red zone, the Colts marched to paydirt in eight plays with Ferguson capping the drive from 8 yards. Brady Blattner, who played well on defense from his linebacker spot, ran in the 2-point conversion.

A Shamrocks punt gave the ball back to Meadowbrook on its 38. Davis Black ignited the drive when he found Boston Black for a 48-yard gain. Two plays later, he found his brother, Addy, who made an impressive juggling catch from 13 yards out.

Barnesville went out on downs on its next possession and the Colts tallied again. Garrett Clendenning busted off a 25-yard burst for a touchdown. The run for two failed again and it was 20-0. The Black Brothers hooked up for 22 and then Davis found senior Devon Norman on a nice 15-yard out pattern.

“This is a good football team with a lot of experience and talented players,” Allen said. “I thought we hung in there with them and we can take a lot of positives from this game. We just have to dig into the film, learn from our mistakes and not lose sight of the fact that there’s a lot of football left this season.”

The Shamrocks made it a 20-7 game with 8:46 to go in the third when senior quarterback Tate Dowler found Harley Raines up the seam for a 37-yard touchdown. Ayden Hannahs was perfect on the PAT.

Barnesville’s momentum was short-lived, however. Two possessions later, Meadowbrook answered.

After an interception by Ferguson, the Colts set up shop at Barnesville’s 34. Six plays later, Davis Black took matters into his own hands and raced into the end zone from 23 yards out.

All told, Davis Black finished with 174 yards passing on 11 of 19 accuracy. Ferguson rushed for 99 yards on 18 carries, while Addy and Boston Black went for 68 and 67 yards receiving, respectively.

The Shamrocks run game was shut down. They finished with 5 net yards on 30 carries. Dowler threw for 184 yards on 13 of 23 accuracy. Ayden Hannahs caught two passes for 89 yards, while Cade Hannahs made six receptions.
