Wheeling Park Boys Down Spring Mills, 2-0
WHEELING — Jason Pennybacker made his opportunities count Friday evening against Spring Mills.
The Wheeling Park junior striker headed in Park’s opening goal and assisted on the other as the Patriots (6-2) defeated Spring Mills by a 2-0 score at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Pennybacker got the scoring started for Park in the 36th minute of the first half when he took a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Coleman Meredith, outjumped a Spring Mills defender and headed it past the keeper and into the back of the net.
In the 34th minute of the second half, Pennybacker chased down a through pass near the Spring Mills net and fed a nice pass to Wheeling Park senior Vincent Bauer for an easy chip-in to give Park the 2-0 lead.
Park dominated play during the game, with about a dozen quality scoring opportunities. The two that found the back of the net were more than enough to backstop the team’s solid defensive performance and stellar keeper play of junior Zach Calvert.
The Patriots face Jefferson High School at noon today at Wheeling Island Stadium.
