Dragons Crush Beallsville

BEALLSVILLE — Some coaches discourage their players from scoreboard watching, playoff points perusing or looking into a crystal ball to see who a postseason opponent might be a few weeks out.

Cameron’s Scott Holt isn’t one of those.

“The approach I have with it is have a lot of fun with it,” the Dragons coach said Friday night after his team moved to 9-0 by drubbing Beallsville 62-6.

“Not many teams are in the situation that we’re in. I want them to look at rankings and I want them to start looking at points and scenarios. That’s part of the fun of doing this and that’s part of the fun of seeing who we might be up against.

“The kids look at the OVAC standings, they look at newspapers, they look at the internet and stuff. That’s part of the fun.”

Cameron scored touchdowns on seven of its first 12 plays and Andrew Ritchea rushed for 201 yards and five TDs en route to moving one victory away from a perfect regular season. It can secure that with a victory against Bridgeport (3-6) at Dragon Stadium next Friday.

“The thing I’m most proud of was that our mental approach was there,” Holt said. “You can lose games if you’re not mentally prepared. Or, you can certainly mightily struggle, and (Friday night), I thought we had the mental approach from the opening kickoff. We asserted ourselves. We did what we wanted to do. We did what we needed to do and we took that on and now we’re 9-0.”

The Dragons entered the game fourth in the WVSSAC Class A rankings and Friday’s victory all but assured them of a home first-round playoff contest.

Meanwhile, the postseason isn’t something in Beallsville’s immediate future. However, Blue Devils coach Larry Deem saw some flashes against Cameron that made him hopeful his program is about to turn the corner.

“They’re gamers,” Deem said. “One thing about these young men is they don’t quit.”

With starting quarterback Dakota Phillips out of the lineup for disciplinary reasons, Wyatt Moore started behind center. But midway through the first quarter he also went down, necessitating the entrance of James Schnegg into the role.

He guided the Blue Devils (1-8) on their only scoring drive, a 14-play, 68-yard march that ate up eight minutes off a running third-quarter clock and a sliver of the fourth. Schnegg capped the drive with a 5-yard scamper, but it was Bradley Moats that keyed the effort with seven carries for 33 yards.

“And he’s a freshman, all 128 pounds of him,” Deem said with a smile. “He’ll stick his nose in there offensively and defensively. Hopefully, that wake us up a little to show how important everyone is on this team.

“With only losing three seniors (who were honored before the game) we have a good foundation and I think the boys are finally realizing how good they can be.

“But hats off to Coach Holt. They’re the real deal … a lot of weapons, a lot of speed, a lot of aggressiveness. That’s a quality team .”

Travis Mickey also caught a pair of touchdown passes, both from Aidan Lucey.

“One of the good things about having such an experienced group is they handle nights like this so well,” Holt said. “They handled the challenge of competing against themselves and doing the best that they can do.

“They don’t take anyone lightly and they take a lot of pride in what they do. When that comes together its a good night.”
