Senators Beat Stars, 4-1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — For the first time in a long time, the Ottawa Senators are having fun and picking up wins at the same time.

Craig Anderson made 37 saves to lead the Senators to a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday night.

Ottawa is also getting contributions from its rookies, who are bringing some much-needed enthusiasm to a team that didn’t have much to celebrate last season.

Rookie Maxime Lajoie tied the score for Ottawa late in the second, while fellow rookie Brady Tkachuk, Mikkel Boedker and Zack Smith scored in the third.

“The fun is watching our young guys step up and contributing at a rapid rate right at the moment,” Anderson said. “It’s fun watching these kids go out there and have a blast.”

Despite an inexperienced lineup, the Senators rallied to improve to 3-2-1.

“We were getting lot of chances and we went after it,” said Matt Duchene, who had two assists. “That’s going to be our mentality all season. Even if we’re down a goal we’re going after it. We’re not going to try and not lose because that’s the worst thing you can do and I thought we did a really good job going after it.”

John Klingberg had the lone goal for Dallas, which was playing its first road game after opening the season with four at home. Ben Bishop made 21 saves while losing in regulation against Ottawa for the first time (9-1-4) in his career.

“I don’t think it was a terrible game, but obviously it’s two points you wish you would have had,” Bishop said. “That’s a tough streak to lose, but eventually it was going to happen. It was a good run. Would have been nice to get the two points, but we’ll have to get them next time.”

With the score tied 1-1, the Senators went ahead for good early in the third as Dylan DeMelo put a shot on goal and Tkachuk, right in front, redirected it past Bishop at 1:27.

Ottawa made it 3-1 just past midway through the period as Matt Duchene, from behind the net, made a no-look pass to Boedker, who one-timed it past Bishop for his first with the Senators.

“We did a lot of really good things,” Duchene said. “I thought we were good in the first, but we upped it after that and thought we deserved the win.”

Looking to cut the lead the Stars pulled their goalie with more than 7 minutes left, and tried it again with over 4 minutes remaining, but Anderson was solid.

“I just wanted to put a little more urgency and give ourselves a chance,” Stars coach Jim Montgomery said. “I thought the pulled goalie situation actually worked, we just didn’t score the rest of the night.”

Smith scored an empty-netter with 1:37 remaining to seal the win.

Canadiens 7

Red Wings 3

MONTREAL (AP) — Jonathan Drouin scored twice, Tomas Plekanec had a goal in his 1,000th game, and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings.

Tomas Tatar, Brendan Gallagher, Charles Hudon and Paul Byron also scored for the Canadiens. With Carey Price still out with the flu, backup goalie Antti Niemi stopped 25 shots for his second consecutive victory.

Andreas Athanasiou had two goals and Thomas Vanek also scored for the rebuilding Wings, who are winless through six games (0-4-2) for their worst start in franchise history. Jimmy Howard gave up five goals on 20 shots before being replaced by Jonathan Bernier in the second period. Bernier finished with 13 saves.

The Red Wings, who were coming off an 8-2 loss to Boston, have now allowed an NHL-worst 29 goals over six games.

Montreal has won six straight against Detroit dating back to March 2017.

After Drouin opened the scoring for Montreal on a penalty shot at 7:13 of the first, Plekanec made it 2-0 by shooting a puck on goal that Filip Hronek deflected past his own goalie at 16:56.

Predators 4, Wild 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Johansen and P.K. Subban each had two assists, and the Nashville Predators beat the Minnesota Wild for their fifth win in six games.

Craig Smith, Mattias Ekholm, Filip Forsberg and Miikka Salomaki scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne finished with 29 saves.

Minnesota lost for the fourth time in five games. Mikko Koivu had a goal and an assist for the Wild, and Matt Dumba also scored.

After Smith and Dumba exchanged goals in the first period, Nashville opened a 3-1 lead in the second.

As a penalty on Nashville’s Ryan Ellis was expiring, Johansen began an odd-man rush with Ekholm trailing. From the right faceoff dot, Johansen found Ekholm in the slot, where he beat Alex Stalock with a wrist shot.

Maple Leafs 4, Kings 1

TORONTO (AP) — Garret Sparks made 33 saves in a surprise start, Kasperi Kapanen scored twice and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Los Angeles Kings for their fifth straight win.

Patrick Marleau and Mitch Marner also scored to help Toronto win for the sixth time in seven games. Auston Matthews and Jake Gardiner each added two assists.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored for the Kings, who have lost four of six (2-3-1). Jack Campbell stopped 21 shots for Los Angeles.

Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock announced Sparks as the game’s starter ahead of No. 1 goalie Frederik Andersen after the morning skate. Toronto then announced about 2 1/2 hours before puck drop that Andersen has a lower-body injury and is listed as day-to-day, with Eamon McAdam getting recalled from Newfoundland of the ECHL on an emergency basis.

McAdam got the promotion after the Maple Leafs lost both Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard to the waiver wire right before the season, while Kasimir Kaskisuo of the AHL’s Toronto Marlies was injured during the weekend. Jeff Glass, Kaskisuo’s backup with the Marlies, is on an AHL-only contract.

The Maple Leafs were back home after a perfect 4-0-0 road trip where they outscored their opponents 23-15, including a 4-2 victory over defending Stanley Cup champion Washington on Saturday.

Penguins D Schultz out 4 months with fractured left leg

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz will miss the next four months because of a fractured left leg.

Schultz injured the leg in the first period of a shootout loss to Montreal on Saturday after getting tangled up with Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec. The team announced Monday that Schultz underwent surgery Sunday and will be out until February.

The 28-year-old Schultz has four assists in four games this season for Pittsburgh.

Avalanche claim forward Marko Dano from Jets off waivers

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche have claimed center Marko Dano off waivers from Winnipeg.

The 23-year-old played in 23 games for the Jets last season with two goals and an assist. He was a first-round pick of Columbus in 2013.

Over his career, the 5-foot-11, 212-pound Dano has played in 130 NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks and the Jets. He has 19 goals and 26 assists.

The Avs embark on an Eastern trip that takes them to New York to face the Rangers on Tuesday, followed by games in New Jersey, Carolina and Philadelphia.

Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson in concussion protocol

The Vancouver Canucks say rookie forward Elias Pettersson is in concussion protocol while center Jay Beagle is out six weeks with a broken forearm.

Pettersson was injured when he was taken hard into the end boards and slammed to the ice by Florida defenseman Mike Matheson in the third period of Vancouver’s 3-2 win Saturday. There was no penalty on the play.

The 19-year-old Swedish center appeared woozy afterward and needed assistance to get to the locker room. He did not return to the game. After the game, Canucks coach Travis Green called the hit “a dirty play.”

Matheson was scheduled to have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Monday.

Beagle was injured in the same game after blocking a shot.

The loss of Pettersson for any significant length of time will be a blow to the rebuilding Canucks. The rising star has five goals and three assists in five games this season after being selected fifth overall by the Canucks in the 2017 NHL draft.

Beagle, a veteran center, signed a four-year contract worth an average of $3 million per year with the Canucks on July 1. He helped the Washington Capitals win their first Stanley Cup last season.
