MORGANTOWN — Despite not making a return to Beckley for the state tournament, the Wheeling Park boys soccer team had another solid year and will be one of the favorites again next season.

One reason for such optimism will be the return of midfielder Chris Romanek, forward Louie Aulick and goalie Zach Calvert.

The trio was selected Class AAA first team all-state by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Aulick, who nabbed a utility spot, had a breakout season with 25 goals and six assists. Romanek and Calvert are each making a second straight appearance on the first team.

Romanek had nine goals and eight assists, while Calvert recorded nine shutouts for Coach Mario Julian’s Patriots.

Teammate Clay Meredith was selected a defender on the second team. Brooke’s Josh Ferguson nabbed a second team utility spot.

Local honorable mentions were Park’s Coleman Meredith, Brooke’s Nick Cruny and Matt Reed, and John Marshall’s Justin Mencer.

One reason Park was unable to repeat its succcess of last year was Joe Biafora.

The standout senior led an undefeated University squad to Beckley, where the Hawks narrowly lost to George Washington in the state soccer semifinals.

His prowess as a leader — as well as his 49 goals — led to him being named the captain of the Class AAA all-state first team.

Biafora’s teammate Mason Shockley joins the captain on the first team as a midfielder. Rounding out the group of midfielders are Romanek, Ryan Fisher (Hurricane, 21 goals and 17 assists) and Broedy Boyce (Ripley, 22 goals and 27 assists).

Joining Biafora up front are forwards Chance Anderson (George Washington), Davisson Flint (Ripley, 31 goals and 13 assists) and Drake Lester (Hurricane, 21 goals and 17 assists).

Cade Fix (Princeton, eight goals and three assists), Zak Abdul-Jalil (George Washington) and Bohdi Fritzsch (Hedgesville) were selected as the first-team defenders, while goalkeepers Calvert, Jacob McKnight (Parkersburg, .6 goals per game average) and Nick Eskins (Hurricane, 14 shutouts) round out the first-team position players.

Huntington’s Owen Stoll (15 goals and seven assists) was the second utility player.

The second team is comprised of forwards Noah Carney, the second team captain (George Washington), Isaiah Owen (Parkersburg), Drew Hopkins (Princeton) and Montgomery Rebelo (Preston); midfielders Colton Jones (Hurricane), Simon Anton (Cabell Midland), Nick Hawkins (Parkersburg South) and Ryan Hurst (Buckhannon-Upshur); defenders Meredith , Perrin Schray (Huntington), Pierce Spain (University); goalkeeper Chase Hawkins (Parkersburg South); and utility players Ferguson, Alik Assi (Hurricane), Tyler Bubb (Hedgesville) and Nathan Williams (Woodrow Wilson).
