State Champs Back For Brooke Track

WELLSBURG — Brooke track coach Paul Julio has a very inexperienced girls’ squad this season but a boys’ team with quality veteran leadership.

While there may not be a lot of experience on the girls’ team Julio does have a returning W.Va. Class AAA state champion in junior long jumper Yuzmin Island, who is also one of the team’s top returning sprinters.

There are only two seniors on the roster in Rachel Clayton (sprints, HJ) and Emily Donley (mid-distance) while Island will be joined by four classmates in Imajin Nickerson (distance), Samantha Silivka (sprints), Anna Snoderly (sprints) and Hallee Vizyak (mid-distance, distance).

Sophomores are Abbey Horvath (sprints), Pendergrast Mars (hurdles, HJ), Olivia Orban (mid-distance), Natalie Silivka (weights) and Makenzie Stevens (sprints). Freshmen athletes are Melyn Bachinski (hurdles), Haven Baker (sprints), Alexis Cipoletti (sprints), Adeyah Frazier (hurdles, sprints), Estella Lahita (hurdles, LJ) and Haile Swiger (weights).

“Our girls’ team is very young and we will need girls like Yuzmin Island and our seniors to be leaders,” Julio said. “We lost some quality kids from last year’s team and we are starting fresh, but we have some girls that have the ability to go out and compete.”

The Brooke boys also had a state champion last season in 100-meter high hurdler Ethan Secrist, however, he has graduated and Julio will look in different directions for points this year.

There are seven seniors on the roster with William Barney (LJ, sprints), Brett Brown (hurdles, sprints), Devin Castro (sprints), Josh Caswell (sprints, mid-distance)Cameron McAllister (sprints), Jonathan Radcliffe (HJ, sprints) and Aleksey Rasz (mid-distance).

Juniors are Nick Brucchi (sprints), John Ewing (distance), Jeff Hart (sprints) and Ryan Richard (hurdles). Sophomores will be Quinlin Blair (mid-distance), Samuel Casto (weights), Braydon Demaria (distance, SP), Roger Gabbert (SP, sprints), Drake Hukill (SP, sprints), Joe Huntzinger (mid-distance), Ethan Robey (distance), Aaron Scipio (HJ, LJ, sprints), Jared Steinbach (hurdles) and Jacob Stuckey (hurdles).

Incoming freshmen include Jakob Baskert (sprints), Tommy Charnie (mid-distance), Stephan Harris (sprints), Camden Mackey (mid-distance), Mitchell Sagan (sprints) and Luke Secrist (sprints).

“I know we lost a few good runners, but we still have a little bit of a veteran group coming back,” Julio said. “I think we will have a few strong points but I am very excited about the quality of athletes we have.

“This is also one of the better young groups that we have had, both boys and girls, in a long time. I am really looking forward to this season and I believe that this boys’ group has the chance to be very competitive.”
