WLU’s Brown Is Lone Repeater on All-Region Team
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — After leading West Liberty to a 21-win season and NCAA Division II Tournament berth, Hilltopper star Marissa Brown was the only repeat selection Thursday when the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association released its 2018-19 All-Atlantic Region team.
The 6-foot-3 senior center from Columbus, Ohio has spent her final collegiate season virtually rewriting the Mountain East Conference record book. The MEC Player of the Year is the only NCAA Division II woman ranked among the Top 10 nationally in scoring (sixth, 24.3 ppg.), rebounding (second, 13.1 ppg.) and blocked shots (fourth, 3.73) and made more field goals than any other NCAA D2 woman for the second straight season.
Brown’s 316 field goals this season are the most by an NCAA Division II woman in the past 17 years. She also ranks No. 2 nationally with 21 double-doubles, is No. 7 in field-goal percentage (316-517, 61.1 percent) and is just 7 rebounds away from blowing past the 400-rebound single-season milestone.
The dominant post was a five-time MEC Player of the Week, breaking her own single-season scoring record with 730 points.
She also set the MEC’s all-time single-game scoring record with a 46-point explosion against West Virginia State on Jan. 10 while scoring 20 or more points in 21 of her 30 games with 9 games of 30-plus points and two games of 40 or more.
In addition to the MEC single-game and single-season scoring records, the Youngstown State transfer also broke her own MEC single-game field goal mark in the West Virginia State game with 21 baskets and has already shattered the league’s previous record for career field goals with 776 field goals in just three seasons.
California (Pa.) senior Seirra Barrett was chosen as the D2CCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year. Barrett, the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and Defensive Athlete of the Year, led the PSAC in rebounds (255, 8.8 rpg.) and steals (81, 2.8 spg.) and was the league’s third-leading scorer with 630 points (21.7 ppg.). Barrett also led the PSAC with 10 double-doubles and had six games with 30 or more points.
Joining Brown and Barrett on the All-Region first-team are Charleston’s Raziyah Farrington, Shippensburg’s Ariel Jones and Shareka McNeill of Virginia Union. Second-team honors went to Carolyn Appleby of Indiana (Pa.), Michaela Barnes of Edinboro, Lauren Lister of Millersville, Madison May of Concord and Glenville State’s Emily Stoller.
Brown and the other first-team selections advance to the national ballot for the 2017-18 D2CCA All-America Team, which will be announced later this month.
West Liberty tips off NCAA Division II Tournament action on Friday when the No. 8 seed Hilltoppers (21-9) take on top-seeded and No. 18-ranked Glenville State (29-2) in a 5 p.m. Atlantic Region quarterfinal at the Pioneer’s Waco Center.
