Rain Washes Out Beast of the East

Post 33 declared champs; teams will play on own terms

STEUBENVILLE — Championships are meant to be won on the field, not in the standings.

That’s not how it went down on Sunday.

Due to a downpour of rain and a water covered infield at Vaccaro Field in Steubenville, the 19U semifinal and championship games were canceled.

By rule, the remaining top seed — No. 2 Jefferson County Teramana Post 33 — was declared the official 19U Beast of the East Champion without playing a game on the final day of action.

Although, the Beast of the East officials will not allow the tournament to be extended another day, Post 33 manager Anthony Pierro along with the other two teams remaining in the bracket (Armstrong Grizzlies and Fayette Patriots) have decided to continue the tournament today on their own terms.

“The head of the Beast of the East will not let us play (Monday),” Pierro said. “All they said was they won’t do it.

“But all three of the coaches agreed that we are going to play and just pay for it ourselves and pay the umpires ourselves because we don’t want it to end up that way.

“We want to win the right way and not have it handed to us because we are the higher seed. All the coaches agree, so that’s what we are going to do and the winner walks away with the trophy.”

Post 33 and Armstrong will battle in the semifinal contest today at 3 p.m. at Vaccaro Field and the winner will face Fayette at 6 p.m. to settle it once and for all.

Armstrong shut down Moundsville Post 3 14-0 and Fayette upset the top seeded Independent Players on Sunday before the skies opened up with Post 33 and Armstrong ready to take the field.

“(Sunday) it just happened to be the luck of the draw,” Pierro said.

“I’m just excited that each team wants to come back and do this. We can each get our games in and it will be done the right way.”

Edison’s field was also an option for Sunday’s games but it was also unplayable due to rain.

Wheeling Post 1 11U and the Warhawk Baseball Club were also each declared champions of the 12U and 14U Divisions, respectively, due to rain.

The 16U Division bracket was played at Washington & Jefferson and was the only division to have a champion decided on the field as 159 Baseball upended the Columbus Sharks Teal 16U squad to secure the title.
