Woman’s Club of Wheeling Announces October Events

WHEELING — “The Woman’s Club of Wheeling will be meeting on Friday, Oct. 7, and Friday, Oct. 21, at the Monument Place in Wheeling.

The general meetings will begin at 1 p.m. with President Liz McKee presiding. It is an organization of 132 members dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. The club was organized in 1911 and admitted to the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) in 1913.

The program following the Oct. 7 meeting is Highway 96, a group of four singers. Not many groups can say they have a music history that spans over 50 years, but there they are. Highway 96 is on the scene and ready to send listeners on a musical road trip. Some of their favorite memories go hand-in-hand with summer road trips and weekends cruising on Main Street. Hailing from Nashville, Tenn., they bring a unique blend of artsy, eclectic and old-fashioned harmony singing to the table.

On Oct. 21, William Ihlenfeld will speak to members about scams and fraud against seniors. William J. Ihlenfeld, II, was sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia on Oct. 12, 2021. Ihlenfeld was nominated by President Biden on Aug. 10, 2021, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Oct. 5, 2021. As U.S. attorney, Ihlenfeld is the top-ranking federal law enforcement official in the Northern District of West Virginia. He oversees a staff of 53 employees, including 24 attorneys and 28 non-attorney support personnel. The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the district. Ihlenfeld’s career in law has been punctuated by terms of public service. He previously served as the U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of West Virginia from 2010 until 2016. Prior to that, he was a state prosecutor for thirteen years in Ohio County and Brooke County, including three years as a domestic violence prosecutor. Most recently, he was a member of the West Virginia Legislature. The prevention and prosecution of public corruption has been a priority of Ihlenfeld throughout his career and will continue to be during his second term as U.S. attorney.

He served for many years as an executive board member of the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence as well as the Upper Ohio Valley Sexual Assault Help Center. Ihlenfeld graduated with honors from Ohio University and earned his law degree from West Virginia University.

On Oct. 7, the Arts and Crafts competition with 104 categories will be held and judged at 11 a.m. Members are encouraged to participate by submitting their entries at that time. The Health and Wellness Committee will sponsor a bake sale to raise money for cancer patients at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital.

The Environment Committee is promoting the Marshall County Fall Dumpster Clean-Up 2022 and recycling events. Members are asked to report the number of plastic bags that were recycled since April.
