Dawn-to-Dusk to Benefit Children With Autism

Since 2004, under the direction of Robert “Hoagy” Carmichael, Hoagy’s Heroes has organized multiple long-distance motorcycle rides to raise money for various charities. On Aug. 13, Hoagy’s Heroes will hold their third annual Dawn-to-Dusk 500-mile ride, and this year’s recipients are local children with autism who attend Augusta Levy Learning Center in Wheeling.

Every 11 minutes, another family receives the devastating news that their child has an autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a complex neurodevelopment disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in every 68 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Participants on the Hoagy’s Heroes Dawn-to-Dusk 500-mile ride must have at least one donation to ride, and for every $100 collected, the participant will be eligible for a chance for the prize drawing. Participants may start their ride at any time as long as the ride has ended by 7 p.m. on Aug. 13.

This year, Hillbilly Hotdogs, a destination that appeared on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” in 2007 will be added as one of the destinations.

The cost for registration includes a Hoagy’s Heroes patch, rocker, certificate and banquet following the ride at Heroes Haven, 315 Fourth St., Glen Dale. Non-riders are also encouraged to attend the banquet for a lesser fee.

Participants can register online at www.hoagys

heroes.org.

Augusta Levy Learning Center was established in 2005 as the first and largest research-based program in the state of West Virginia. Each student at ALLC has his or her own unique curriculum based on the child’s needs and abilities. Each child receives at least 30 hours a week of intensive, one-on-one instruction using Applied Behavior Analysis. The intervention program is based on extensive clinical experience and more than 40 years of scientific research and yields the best educational results for children with autism.
