Painters to Hit Streets Of Wheeling Aug. 4-7
Paint Historic Wheeling 2016 will take place Aug. 4-7 in Wheeling, hosted by Artworks Around Town. Participants are invited to set up their easels or get out their sketch pads to capture aspects of the city’s historic neighborhoods and structures, from the Suspension Bridge to row houses to the Blue Church.
A fourth day has been added this year at the request of artists, organizers said.
The plein air painting event includes optional workshops with local and visiting painters, public receptions each evening and an awards ceremony. Participating artists are invited to display their work at Artworks Studio Gallery throughout the month of August.
The juried competition includes cash prizes, and corporate-sponsored awards have been added this year.
The event begins each morning at 8:30 a.m. with a sign-in and continental breakfast at Artworks in the Upper Market House of Centre Market in Wheeling. Artists may paint en plein air from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 5-6 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7.

The Aug. 5 reception is in conjunction with Artworks’ First Friday event, from 5-8 p.m. On Aug. 6, Barry Jeter will speak about plein air painting from 5-7 p.m. From 2-4 p.m. Sunday, prizes will be awarded, and there will be a sale of art produced during the event.
