It’s Viennese Winter Ball Time for the Symphony
WHEELING — The 38th annual Viennese Winter Ball is scheduled to take place at Oglebay’s Glessner Auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Ellen Culler and Roanne Burech are co-chairs for the ball. Other members of the committee, and their responsibilities, are: Jean Bailey, invitations; Karen Blair, flowers; Christin Byrum, program; Sandra M. Chapman, sponsors; Jennifer Croft, transportation; Betsy Delk, Patron Party; Patty Dunlevy, desserts; Anne Harman, Patron Party; Jane Helfer, Cotillion; Jamie Leary, treasurer; Holly McCluskey, publicity; Stephanie Nanners, Pages; Roberta Olejasz, Intermezzo; Laura Reed, bell decor, and Elizabeth Slater, Ball reservations.
For the ball’s opening procession into Glessner Auditorium, Alexander J. Roth is serving as grand herald. Hugo J. Andreini III and Ethan Chapman Casey are assuming the roles of chamberlains. Cheryl Pompeo is the choreographer and dancing instructor for the cotillion.
A highlight of the evening is the participation of the Cotillion, featuring 10 young women and 10 young men who are seniors at area high schools. Roberta and Michael Olejasz are sponsors of the 2019 Cotillion.
An elegant menu is planned for the formal dinner. Chilled seared scallop served with tomato jam, basil oil, corn shoots and apple wood smoked sea salt is the appetizer. The salad course is baby arugula greens topped with black mission figs, caramelized cipollini and a black pepper sugar cage dressed with unfiltered olive oil. Both the appetizer and salad are paired with a Cartlidge & Brown chardonnay. A duo of lemon raspberry sorbet and champagne sorbet will be offered during the Intermezzo. The entree is filet mignon with bacon jam and Gorgonzola cheese, served with dauphinoise potatoes, haricots verts with candied shallots and brioche rolls with salted butter and flavored tomato butter; all paired with a Catena cabernet sauvignon. An array of elegant cakes and pastries are offered for dessert.
