Thursday Music Club Chorus Presents ‘Salute to America’

WHEELING — The Thursday Music Club’s spring concert will be held in the sanctuary of Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger St., at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The event is open to the public. A luncheon, catered by Judi Porterfield, will be held in the church’s Newmeyer Hall after the concert. Reservations are required for the luncheon and may be made by calling Emily Mayer at 304-232-1714 by Monday.

The club’s 24-member chorus is preparing a program as a “Salute to America” with a medley of patriotic songs leading off the concert and concluding with some audience participation. The program includes an African American spiritual, “I Want Two Wings,” and a traditional spiritual, “Goin’ Home on a Cloud.”

The group will sing “And All That Jazz” from the musical, “Chicago,” and music from Disney shows including “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin” and “Pocahontas.” The chorus also will perform three pop tunes, “Sweet Talkin’ Guy,” “He’s So Fine” and “One Fine Day.”

Soloists for the program are Judy Beaver, Margie Bechtel, Molly Beresh, Joan Campbell, Carol Couch, Sharon Cundiff, Janet Jaquay, Pam Leech, Emily Mayer, Suzie McCormick, Linda Wade and Kathryn Wallington.

The chorus is under the direction of Anita Chops. The accompanist is Debbie Breiding and the percussionist is Donna Zanke.

President Geri Sloane will conduct a short business meeting. Carol Austin, Kathryn Kelly and Martha Haigwood are the sponsors for this concert performance.

Joyce Dimitro and Linda Hemphill are in charge of table decorations. The greeters are Betty Davis and Martha Haigwood.

It is the last Thursday Music Club meeting for the 2018-19 season. A membership tea and coffee event is planned in September to launch a new season.

The music study group will hold its final meeting of the season at St. James Lutheran Church, 1409 Chapline St., at 1 p.m. April 8. Judy Szymialis will be the presenter. Emily Mayer will be the hostess. The study group will resume its meetings in October.
