Civil War Election Topic at Moundsville Library

President’s Day at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library will feature a discussion of one of the most significant presidential elections in U.S. history. At 6 p.m. Monday, Feb.16, Roger Micker will present “The Election of 1864.”

This program is aimed at adults and older students. The background for the national political scene leading to the election of 1864 was the Civil War that embroiled the U.S. While incumbent President Abraham Lincoln believed he was quite possibly the only candidate who could eliminate slavery and unify the country, he was unsure if he even would receive the Republican nomination.

A local historian and retired Steubenville High School history teacher, Micker is a trustee and former president of the Ohio Valley Civil Roundtable. In 2010 he was one of only two high school teachers selected to serve on the Ohio Governor’s 12-member Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee.

In addition to presenting lectures to Ohio Valley organizations, Micker has given presentations in numerous other locations, including Columbus, Pittsburgh, Gettysburg, Antietam and Murfreesboro.

The Moundsville Library is located at Fifth and Tomlinson.
