Civil War Story In Song at Moundsville Library
The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library will have a very special event at 6 p.m. on Monday, when JoAnn Peterson, of Kingwood, W.Va., presents “A Mother’s Heart Divided: A West Virginia Civil War Story,” a program she also wrote. Moving, enlightening and entertaining, this event is free and open to the public and is aimed at adults and students.
“A Mother’s Heart Divided” is about Maisie Twigg, a woman living in the new state of West Virginia, whose husband is fighting for the Union and whose son has joined the Confederate forces. The poignant story is intertwined with 19 songs from the Civil War era. JoAnn Peterson will be accompanied by her husband Tom Peterson on guitar.
As a presenter for the West Virginia Humanities Council History Alive! program, Peterson has portrayed several historical figures including Mary Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln; Margaret “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” of Titanic fame; adventurer and groundbreaking reporter Nellie Bly; and Jenny Lind, renowned singer and philanthropist who was the inspiration of the short story which became Disney’s movie Frozen.
Her performances in professional musical theater include the role of Mother Abbess in “The Sound of Music” with West Virginia Public Theatre. She also portrayed Julia Pierpont in the WV PBS documentary “West Virginia: Road to Statehood.” She will be playing the wife of Sen. Robert Byrd in a sci-fi movie, “Kecksburg,” set to be filmed in 2018. JoAnn Peterson is the owner of Mountaineer Country Tours and serves as executive director of Preston Community Arts Center in Kingwood.
The Moundsville Library program is co-sponsored by the Robert Baker Family. Light refreshments will be available. The library is located at the corner of Fifth Street and Tomlinson in Moundsville.
