Towngate Cinema in Wheeling to Present ‘Moulin Rouge’
2001 Oscar-Winning Motion Picture Musical Returns to the Big Screen This Weekend
WHEELING — Towngate Art House Cinema continues this weekend with 2001’s Oscar-winning, hit film “Moulin Rouge.” It will be shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre.
“Moulin Rouge” stars Ewan McGregor as Christian, a young poet who moves to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution taking over the underground scene of the city. He soon falls in love with the star courtesan of the Moulin Rouge, Satine, played by Nicole Kidman. A love triangle ensues once the unlovable Duke gets involved.
The film was nominated for 129 major film awards, winning 86, including Golden Globes for Best Picture (musical or comedy), Best Actress (Kidman) and Best Original Score. It won Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
“Moulin Rouge” will be shown at Towngate at 7 p.m. Friday; 4 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets for all screenings can be purchased at the door and are $7 per person. Box office opens one hour prior to each screening. You can purchase beer, wine, soda, water, popcorn and candy at all Towngate movies.
A church-turned-theater, Towngate is located in Wheeling’s historic Centre Market District and is part of the nonprofit Oglebay Institute. Towngate offers entertainment almost every weekend.
In addition to main stage theater productions, Towngate also offers poetry and spoken word performances and children’s theater. Towngate also features comedy and improv shows. Local and regional musicians perform concerts on the Towngate stage and a variety of acting classes are offered year-round for all ages.
As a single screen cinema, Towngate shows a variety of films on select weekends throughout the year including classic movies, independent films, thought-provoking documentaries and film shorts by local and regional filmmakers. Towngate is also an art gallery, with changing exhibits on display in the theater lobby.
