10th Annual Ohio Valley Rib & Chicken Cook-Off Set

WHEELING — The 10th annual Ohio Valley Rib & Chicken Cook-Off kicks off today, Friday, June 21, at Heritage Port in Wheeling.

The event takes place today and Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. each day.

Rib burners will be firing up their grills in hopes of capturing the Carl Carenbauer Grand Champion trophy or trophies for first and second place for chicken and ribs.

Among the rib vendors will be Big Panny’s BBQ, Smoke Shack, Grillin’ N Chillin’ BBQ, Big Girls BBQ, along with local favorite Otey’s Smokehouse. New this year are Jeph’s Barbeque from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and WV BK Sports Clubs out of Charleston, W.Va.

Rib sampler prices have not changed. If rigs are chicken are not your thing, there will be other food vendors selling your favorite summertime food and beverages.

On Saturday, the cook-off is joining with the Wheeling 250 celebration to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge. There will be storytellers and living history presentations throughout the day, a plein air artist painting event, Ohio River cruises on a Gateway Clipper board and a spectacular fireworks display at dusk.

Free live musical entertainment is lined up to take the stage on both days. The stage will be on 12th Street, where chairs and tables will be set up. Jason Treuman, the Ron Retzer Trio, The Remedy Band, Vinyl Soul and Taylor Jo & Copper Creek Band are sure to perform some of your favorite tunes.

Craft vendors will be hawking their wares, and a beer garden will be open as well.

Everyone is welcome to come together during this family-friendly weekend to enjoy the many activities along the beautiful Ohio riverfront.
