Hospital Is Focus of Lunch With Books at Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling
WHEELING –The Ohio County Public Library in downtown Wheeling kicks off the weekly Lunch With Books programs at noon Tuesday, Jan. 7, with a look back on a city landmark.
The recent closing of Wheeling’s historic “City Hospital,” long known as the Ohio Valley General Hospital (OVGH) and finally the Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC), was a painful and emotionally draining event for many people.
To help preserve the institution’s legacy, former staff helped secure the OVMC Auxiliary’s scrapbooks, photographs, annual reports and minute books for donation to the Archives at the Ohio County Public Library.
The collection documents the Auxiliary’s mission to educate the community and support the efforts of the hospital it served for more than100 years. The hospital’s board of trustees records (1914-2018) were also donated, as were yearbooks, photographs and museum artifacts from the hospital’s School of Nursing.
At this program, former hospital staff, nursing school alumni, Auxiliary members and patients are invited to share their memories of the historic hospital and all of its subsidiary organizations.
The program will include displays from the archival collections.
Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, they begin at noon on Tuesdays in the library’s auditorium. Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch, and complimentary beverages are provided.
