Kickoff of Wheeling’s Summer Events Postponed Until August

Heritage Port in Wheeling is usually bustling with a full slate of activities by this time in May. This week, officials with the city of Wheeling announced that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, summer events planned through the city will be postponed until August. (Photo by Eric Ayres)

WHEELING — In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the kickoff of Wheeling’s summer events has been postponed until August. This includes Waterfront Wednesdays, Toe Tappin’ Tuesdays, Toe Tappin’ Tuesday’s, Too and Movie Nights.

City Manager Robert Herron said while it was a difficult decision to make, he feeels postponing the start of the summer events is the best course of action at this time.

“While the governor has rolled out his plan to re-open West Virginia slowly, the threat of COVID-19 still exists. We don’t want to take any unnecessary chances with the health and well- being of our residents, our staff members that make the events happen or the entertainers,” he said.

“We’ve been keeping a close eye on the guidelines set down by the CDC, the governor’s office and the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department and those entities are still emphasizing social distancing and discouraging the gathering of large crowds,” Herron said. “Maybe by August, things related to COVID-19 will have evolved enough to have these events safely. We are holding out hope for some entertainment. However, continual review of the viability of holding August events will be ongoing over the next several weeks and unfortunately could result in further postponements.”

Herron noted that by delaying the concerts and movies rather than canceling them, city officials hope that residents will still have the opportunity to enjoy some of the city-sponsored events that are held annually.

He did emphasize that the situation with COVID-19 is fluid and because the revised plan for summer events is subject to change, the public should visit the city’s website and social media pages often for the most up-to-date information.

Currently, the city’s revised summer events schedule is as follows:
