The Gallery is Open For Artworks Around Town

‘Not My Favorite Van Gogh’ by Sadie

WHEELING — Fresh, vibrant work done by students of St. John Central Academy will be on display through July 2020 in the student gallery of Artworks Around Town in Wheeling’s historic Centre Market.

The black and white photographs of artists Larry Travis, Giullio Cappelletti and Len Smith continue to be featured in the Studio Gallery. Because of COVID 19 restrictions, a reception cannot be part of this celebration of talent but the works are up and visitors are encouraged to come in and enjoy both of these shows.

Under the expert guidance of teacher and artist Bobbi Priebe, students, with no prior formalized instruction in art techniques, have produced works worthy of note. St. John Central Academy opened its doors in August 2019 for students from pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade. All the students are taught art but because of limited space, only the work of the high school students is displayed at this show.

The student’s learning experience began with an introduction to basic technical skills and craftsmanship in various media, from doing a simple sketch of a dog to drawing in three-point perspective. Instructor Priebe stated, “They were introduced to the concepts of studium and punctum, and learned to articulate the effects context plays on making sense of observed images. They learned about the role art plays in a community and why lifelong appreciation of art is important.”

The students learned how to work with watercolors by using a wet-on-wet technique and learned what is meant by “negative space.” They mixed primary and secondary acrylic paints to obtain the colors they wanted to use in their paintings.

Throughout the recent school closures due to COVID-19, the students continued to draw, paint, photograph and submit their work for evaluation, assessment and grading. Priebe conveys this message from her students, “They would like to invite the public to come to Artworks Around Town to view, enjoy and appreciate some of that they hav been able to accomplish in this their first and unconventional year of art instruction.”

Priebe has been an active member of Artworks Around Town for years, and her work is unique. In addition to art, she is teaching sociology at the Academy.

Artworks Around Town is a gallery dedicated to promoting local artists and providing community educational programs. Located in Wheeling’s Historic Centre Market, hours are 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday except for Fridays when closing is at 6 p.m.
