Artworks to Host Two Big Shows in August

Collage by Kimberly Lawless, ‘Concert For the Moon’

WHEELING — Artworks Around Town will be hosting two major shows this month.

The Studio Gallery at the north end will feature the works of artists from The Associated Artists of Hancock & Brooke Counties also known as “The Rogues.” Across the hall will be photographs of the late Robert Schramm of West Liberty. Works are on display now. Because of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no opening reception this month. The gallery is open six days a week from 10 a.m until 5:30 p.m., and all the works can be viewed during the regular business hours.

Organized in early 2019, The AAHB is composed of a group of artists and photographers from New Cumberland, Weirton, Follansbee and Wellsburg. According to representative Savannah Schroll Guz, the members meet regularly at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center to share techniques, supplies and creative advice. This colorful and exciting show is called “Rogue Rhapsodies.”

The Student Gallery has a special treat in store for area photographers. The family of the late Robert W. Schramm has donated photographs to Artworks. All works are for sale with all proceeds benefiting the ongoing programs of the gallery. Included in the exhibit are two framed Daguerreotypes, cyanotypes, uranotypes and many matted prints, all priced very reasonably. Schramm graduated with a degree in nuclear physics from West Virginia University in 1959 and joined the faculty of West Liberty State College that same year. During his tenure there, he not only became the head of the Department of Physics, Mathematics and Industrial Technology, he also served for 30 years as director of the West Liberty State College Regional Science Fair.

Schramm was an historian and archivist at heart, creating the WLSC Archives and Museum and later co-founding the Linsly School Archives and Museum. He designed and constructed a women’s history museum that later was permanently installed in the National Women’s History Museum in Alexandria, Va. Schramm was a multi-talented, energetic student, teacher and author whose lifetime of service to all those interested in learning will be one of the legacies he leaves behind.

Artworks is currently accepting applications for area artists who are interested in becoming members. Please go to the gallery’s website:artworksaroundtown.com for details. Artworks is a nonprofit gallery offering space for juried artists to display and sell their work as well as providing ongoing programming for the community. Located in Wheeling’s historic Centre Market House, hours are 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday except for Friday when closing is at 6 p.m.
