Program to Highlight African American Civil War Surgeons
WHEELING — The next Lunch With Books livestream program at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 9, presented by the Ohio County Public Library continues to explore Black History Month with “Oak Leaf on His Shoulder: African American Civil War Surgeons.”
The story of African American medical personnel serving during the Civil War is an often neglected, but important part of Civil War history. This presentation explores the lives and service of three African American physicians who served as surgeons during the Civil War. Historical documents and images help illuminate their story and highlight their contributions to Union’s army success.
Jill L. Newmark, an independent historian and former Exhibition Specialist and Curator at the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Division, will present the program.
