Plein Air Inspiration: Five-Day Ohio Valley Paint Out Is Coming
WHEELING — Plein Air painting returns to Artworks Around Town this year with a new twist!
Developed by member artist Eric Dye and sponsored by Artworks, the Ohio Valley Paint Out promises to be an exciting week for plein air artists. From Wednesday, Sept. 1 to Sunday, Sept. 5, artists will explore painting opportunities in five areas within a 20 mile radius of Wheeling.
Day 1 will take place in Moundsville. Historic sites from the Grave Creek Mound to the Old Penitentiary and scenic downtown as well as Ohio River will provide material for artists.
Bethany College will be the destination on Sept. 2 with its myriad of subjects worthy of a painter’s interest for Day 2. Historic buildings on quaint tree lined streets as well as rural landscapes are abundant in Bethany.
Day 3 takes place at New Vindraban’s Palace of Gold, where visitors will find sculptured lions, gardens, peacocks and a lotus pond reminiscent of Monet’s.
Oglebay Park will be the Day 4 location on Sept. 4. Scenery including The Mansion House, lakes and hundreds of flowers will be waiting for the artist’s interpretation.
Sept. 5 will find everyone painting in the Historic Centre Market area of Wheeling which includes Victorian buildings, Ohio River, iconic Suspension Bridge and many interesting shops.
“Our purpose is to involve artists from beginners to professional plein air painters who enjoy a passion for painting outdoors,” Dye said, noting that the event is open to all interested artists who register and follow the guidelines delineated in the materials available online at www.artworksaroundtown.com.
The five-day event will feature meet-and-greet opportunities, student participation, cash awards for artists painting for the entire event and a Sunday “quick draw” session. Awards will include first, second, third and honorable mention. Artists’ work will exhibited at Artworks from Saturday until the end of the month and will be for sale.
Serving as judge for the Paint Out is well-known Pennsylvania watercolorist, James Farrah. There also will be a People’s Choice award, which will be given at the end of the exhibit the last week of September.
Registration cost is $50 for each artist beginning today. A $15 fee will cover those who sign up for a single day. There is no deadline for registration. Packets for registered artists will include: sites and venues, driving instructions, maps and site-specific information. Artists will be responsible for providing their own art supplies, transportation, housing and meals. Artworks address is 2200 Market St. Wheeling, WV 26003,and the phone number is 304-233-7540.
Dye has participated in many events similar to this all over the country and said he is excited about the potential for plein air artists in this area to share the benefits of this kind of pure painting adventure. There are no workshops with this venue, just lots and lots of painting opportunities that have been carefully chosen and vetted to provide the artist with the utmost in scenic choices.
Margaret Geroch has been helping Dye with organizing the week’s events. Artworks Around Town is proud to be hosting this new kind of Plein Air opportunity.
