‘Remember When Rock Was Young?’
Music Under the Stars: WSO Celebrates Music of Elton John on Sunday
WHEELING — Wheeling Symphony Orchestra will present Music Under the Stars — the WSO’s annual Labor Day weekend concert — at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 5, at Oglebay’s Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater.
Under direction of Maestro John Devlin, the WSO will perform “Remember When Rock Was Young — The Elton John Tribute” starring Craig A. Meyer. This musical tour de force will celebrate decades of chart topping hits by Sir Elton John, including “Benny and the Jets,” “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” and “Candle in the Wind.”
The concert will conclude with Oglebay Park’s fireworks display high above Schenk Lake.
Music Under the Stars is free and open to the public, but symphony officials said donations to the WSO are appreciated. A “Veranda Reception” fundraiser will be held prior to the concert on the Burton Center Porch. Reservations can be made by calling the WSO office.
“Each year, Music Under the Stars is a reunion for our musicians, many of whom spend the summer months at music festivals all over the country,” Devlin said. “We always look forward to coming together as a group to make music for our Ohio Valley audiences. With Craig Meyer on the program, everyone can expect an energetic and exciting show.”
Bryan Braunlich, WSO executive director, said they are eager to welcome a live audience back to Oglebay for the Labor Day weekend concert.
“Last year, we were able to broadcast the concert on television, but there is nothing like having the community gather together to celebrate and enjoy the orchestra,” Braunlich said. “Anyone who would prefer to watch the concert from home can still view the live stream on WTRF.com and on MYOV.”
Music Under the Stars is free and open to the public. The event is presented by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.
Jim Hurley, president and CEO of Kalkreuth, said the company is happy to continue its support of the Symphony with the presenting sponsorship of Music Under the Stars.
“The WSO is an important part of what makes our city a great place to live and work,” Hurley said. “We look forward to being a part of this family-friendly Labor Day weekend tradition.”
Additional support for Music Under Stars is provided by Oglebay Resort and the Musicians’ Trust Fund.
