Oglebay Good Zoo members will soon have the opportunity to step into a new wellness activity with the launch of the “Hoofing It” walking program.

Through Sept. 22, according to zoo Director Joe Greathouse, Good Zoo members will be able to enter the grounds at 9 a.m., prior to the zoo’s normal hours of operation, to walk the trails and view the animals.

“Walkers will be able to enjoy the trail around the zoo, which is about 1,400 steps or three-quarters of a mile, while also having the opportunity to see the animals when they are active while the keepers are providing them with breakfast,” he said. “Each trip around the zoo burns approximately 75 calories.”

For parents or grandparents with little ones who can’t keep up a quicker pace, Greathouse noted the zoo also will offer a “Zooper Fit Kids” program for children ages 4 and older. This program will be held on Saturdays throughout the duration of the Hoofing It program.

“Participants in the Zooper Fit Kids program will join zoo educators and animal ambassadors for a ‘zooper’ fun time. Children will complete a series of physical activities that mirror animal movements as they discover what helps the zoo animals stay healthy and active,” Greathouse said. “Participants will earn a Zooper Fit Certificate by competing in fitness challenges like the ‘Lemur Leap’ and ‘Cheetah Run.’ A healthy snack will be included with this program as well.”

There is a cost for the program per member child, including taxes and fees. Children registering for participation in four or more classes will receive a 10 percent discount on the program, however.

Greathouse added that in addition to the launch of Hoofing It and Zooper Fit Kids programs, the zoo food and beverage team will be offering a variety of new healthy snacks and meal options including veggie burgers, deli wraps, yogurt and mixed fruit.

Greathouse said zoo memberships make great gifts and provide unlimited annual admission to the Good Zoo, participation in the Hoofing It program and reciprocal admission to more than 150 zoos around the country.

Zoo memberships can be purchased by calling the zoo office at 304-243-4100.
