Car Detailing Shop Shines During ‘Show of Hands’ Event in Wheeling

A passion for washing cars and a clean presentation drove home a shiny win for a family-owned auto detailing business Wednesday night.

Attention to Detail, at 452 Main St., received a check for $5,214 after winning the Show of Hands competition organized by Wheeling Heritage.

Owners Jeff Johnson Sr. and his son, Jeff Johnson Jr., plan to put the money toward construction of a steel building that will allow them to detail automobiles inside throughout the year. It will be large enough to accommodate semi-trucks, or as many as five vehicles at one time.

They received the votes of about 400 people in attendance who believed their idea and presentation to be the best among four competing businesses telling of their plans for growth.

“I thank God for giving my son the vision to open up this business, as it was very well needed,” Johnson Sr. said.

He also commended the seven detailer employees who work for them, many of whom were in attendance Wednesday night.

“I’ve always had a passion for cleaning cars ever since I was a senior in high school,” Johnson Sr. said. “That’s when I got my first car, and I just loved cleaning my car and seeing how good I could make it work. It is such a joy to see the people when they see the transformation of their car when they first pick it up,” he said.

He introduced Johnson Jr. as the CEO and founder of Attention to Detail.

“The winter is the most critical part of the year to drive a vehicle, and it’s the most riskiest time of year to drive a vehicle,” Johnson Jr. said. “We thought, how can we best help the community and reduce accidents that help in the winter time? We could potentially save a life during the winter,” he said.

He displayed items used at the shop that help keep ice off windshields and reduce the amount of snow and winter debris that get lodged into tire tread.

The Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP law firm is the corporate sponsor for Show of Hands with other donors and businesses contributing additional funds. The winning presenter receives a minimum of $3,000, and all money collected at the door also goes to the winning presentation.

Other presenters competing for the prize Wednesday night had noteworthy ideas for expansion.

East Wheeling Clay Works, at 747 Main St., wants to renovate its basement to offer larger classes and provide studio space for artists and community members.

Nail City Record, on the 3rd floor of the McLain Building at 40 12th St., has plans to add sound equipment and interactive displays in-store, as well as signage to attract visitors to its new space.

And Wheeling Threads, an online clothing business, is seeking to open a storefront. Owners plan to then go on to purchase their own screen printing equipment and do their own graphic design printing in-house, and offer graphic design classes.
