Marshall County fifth-graders returned Thursday to the Marshall County Fairgrounds for a program that is celebrating its 10th year of bringing farm knowledge to students.

Students visited 11 stations during Hands-on Ag Day. The event covered various aspects of agriculture, including dairy, livestock and pollination. Those participating churned milk into homemade butter, pet cows and were taught about the intricate role bees and other pollinators have on farming.

“Hands-on Ag Day is an event we put together so that kids know their food doesn’t just come from the grocery store,” said Katie Fitzsimmons, a conservationist with Natural Resources Conservation Service. “It’s grown a lot. We implore every parent of a student in the fifth grade to come and see what it’s all about, so when they go home after the event, they can really understand.”

Fitzsimmons said the program also emphasized the labor involved in raising and producing food.

New this year was a station on farmer’s markets and a chicken station to teach students about raising fowl. Fitzsimmons also said the Future Farmers of America station proved popular, as it has every year. The station allows students to see how they can get involved in agriculture locally.
