Musicians’ Group in Wheeling Hopes To Start on High Note

The first two meetings have been scheduled for the new Community Made Serenade program.

With start-up funding from Try This West Virginia and sponsorship from Christ United Methodist Church, the Community Made Serenade program gives amateur musicians of all ages opportunities to play music together. This program welcomes advanced beginners to proficient performers.

The meeting location for the Community Made Serenade is Christ United Methodist Church, 1232 National Road. The first meeting will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Professional trumpet player Matthew Hill, of Wellsburg, will be the featured musician-teacher.

Healthy snacks will be provided at the meeting through the group’s partnership with Grow Ohio Valley.

The second meeting will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 14.

Community Made Serenade musicians will perform different genres of music in an informal group setting under the leadership of guest musicians and teachers.

Practice sessions will provide group performance experience, include guided practice and give players a way to share their love of music with others.

Laurie Ruberg, organizer of the community music performance project, said, “We’re hoping youth and adults who love to play piano, violin, guitar or other instruments and are looking for a group to share their talents with will join us. We’ll start with an informal jazz jam session led by an experience jazz performer and teacher, Matt Hill. After a few structured practice sessions, our group may be ready to perform at informal local events for the holiday season.”

Hill studied music education at Shepherd College and West Liberty University. He has many years of experience of performing and teaching music.

He taught privately for many years. He specializes in teaching brass instruments, but also teaches drums and beginners on saxophone. He is the executive director and founder of Dream Big After-School Music Program.
