Sens. Capito, Manchin Nominate Four Local Students to Service Academies

MANCHIN

WHEELING – U.S. Sens. Shelley Capito, R-W.Va., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., have nominated several dozen state students – four from the local area – to the U.S. Service Academies, which include the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.

The local students are from Ohio and Marshall counties. They are Owen Gainer, Wheeling Central Catholic High School, Air Force Academy and Merchant Marine Academy; Stephen Snyder, The Linsly School, U.S. Military Academy; Nicholas DeFazio, Wheeling Park High School, Merchant Marine Academy; and Katherene Welsh, Munich International School and a Marshall County native, Air Force Academy and Naval Academy.

“Each year, I have the honor and privilege of nominating West Virginia’s best and brightest to our nation’s prestigious service academies. It is truly one of the most important responsibilities I have as a United States senator,” Capito said. “I am proud to announce this group of young men and women who are smart, talented, and driven and have worked extremely hard to get to this point. Attending a service academy provides more than just an education; it provides the foundation for a life of service and leadership. I wish each of these nominees the best of luck, and I am honored to support them throughout this process.”

“It is such an honor to recommend … West Virginia’s brightest young men and women to the U.S. service academies,” Manchin said. “All of our students worked hard to earn these nominations and are determined to serve our country. Many are also striving to carry on their families’ proud military heritage. Today, I join all West Virginians in congratulating these hardworking and committed students, because a nomination to one of our elite service academies will develop these young men and women to become our next generation of military leaders.”

Students have the opportunity to accept the senators’ recommendation and final admission is determined by the respective academy.
