The most important year in a child’s development may be the year the child spends in preschool.

That’s why Ohio County Schools Universal Pre-K Program is a top priority for the school system, and Student Services Director Raquel McLeod said the program is the finest in West Virginia. She said the school system’s Pre-K program has been in place for nearly 20 years, and it is essential because it establishes the foundation of a child’s education.

“A child’s lifetime of learning begins in preschool,” McLeod said. “Pre-K is a time for not only academics, but social and emotional growth that will lead to successful learning throughout these children’s school careers.”

McLeod said Ohio County Schools Pre-K students receive the finest in early childhood education from the most highly-qualified teachers. The program provides the quality education all parents want for their children in a joyful environment. It is a child’s first step in the fundamentals of reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

“Our teachers are well-rounded through professional learning sessions that focus on the whole child,” McLeod said. “The teachers have a great understanding of the needs of their students. They provide the students with a safe and healthy environment in which the students learn, and one in which they enjoy learning.”

Nineteen Ohio County sites offer 4-year-old students a flourishing program that meets their social, cognitive, linguistic, emotional, cultural and physical needs. Ohio County Schools also offers supplemental services including speech and language, occupational, and physical therapy to eligible students.
