One Lane of Ohio 7 Open After Mudslide Near Shadyside

Work to remove debris caused by a mudslide along Ohio 7 in Shadyside is expected to resume today.

Meanwhile, efforts to repair a major sewer line break in the city of Martins Ferry continues.

The hill slide occurred over the weekend, forcing the closure of both southbound lanes of the highway south of the village of Shadyside. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, though, one of the southbound lanes had reopened to traffic Monday. No Ohio Department of Transportation employees were working at the site Monday because of the President’s Day holiday.

A highway patrol dispatcher said some movement of the hillside apparently is still occurring. The mudslide began on Sunday.

ODOT District 11 spokeswoman Lauren Borell said that section of Ohio 7 will be restricted to one lane of traffic until further notice near Shadyside.

“Our geotechnical engineer will assess the damage to the hillside this week. Once that is done, we will have a better idea of when the right lane will open back up,” Borell said Monday.

The region is no stranger to the slides and slips. Wet weather during the past couple of winters has wreaked havoc on local roadways and infrastructure, causing millions of dollars in damage. Some damage that occurred last February during heavy storms and flooding resulted in the need for monetary help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Many local municipalities and counties still are seeking and receiving funding for damage caused by those 2018 storms.

Meanwhile, the city of Martins Ferry is dealing with the need to replace a large sanitary/storm sewer line that broke on Cemetery Road near the old Rose Cafe building.

Mayor Robert Krajnyak said city workers have been working on the line since Thursday. He said about 80 feet of sanitary line must be replaced. Residents in the area still have sewage service.

However, during a recent hard rain some residents did have backups in their basements. Krajnyak estimated the work will be done by the end of the week.
