Ohio County School Calendar Survey Now Available to Public

Ohio County Schools wants the public’s opinion on when the next school year should start and end.

The school district has placed on its website a survey to solicit the community’s ideas about the 2018-2019 school calendar.

The survey mentions the West Virginia Legislature is currently considering House Bill 2433, which if passed would require the school year to begin no earlier than Sept. 1, and end no later than May 31 each calendar school year.

The bill was set for its second of three readings this weekend in the West Virginia Senate, with a vote for passage likely to happen sometime early this week.

“If the bill passes, some alterations may need to be made to our current calendar planning,” the survey states.

It asks the participant if they prefer an earlier start date to the school year with a longer winter break, or to start later and have fewer days off during the holiday season.

The next question asks the participant if they would prefer a week-long spring break, or two long weekends in the spring.

They next question asks the public if there would be a week-long spring break, what week in March would they prefer it to be scheduled.

The Ohio County Board of Education will host a public meeting to discuss the calendar at 5:30 p.m. on March 25 at the board office, located at 2203 National Road, Elm Grove. A second meeting has been set for 5:30 p.m. on April 8, also at the board office.

The survey can be accessed at boe.ohio.k12.wv.us.
