The West Virginia Health Care Association has presented its Best Practice Award for 2018 to Peterson Healthcare & Rehabilitation Hospital for establishing a New Employee Ambassador Program to retain newly-hired employees.

Peterson received the recognition during the association’s annual convention in Morgantown.

Diane Miller, who initiated the New Employee Ambassador program when she was Peterson’s administrator, said the program decreased turnover among new employees and created a sense of community among staff members. Miller now is regional director of operations for Guardian Elder Care, which owns and manages Peterson.

“Our members consistently show how creative and effective they can be,” said Marty Wright, the association’s CEO. “We salute Diane Miller and her staff for showing innovation in creating a welcoming work environment for new hires.”

Miller said the New Employee Ambassador Program depends on a cooperative approach among managers, who introduce newly-hired staff members to Peterson and guide them through their first months in the facility.

“We want to create a perfect impression on an employee’s first day on the job,” she said.

“The ultimate goal is to enhance staffing and morale throughout the facility and decrease turnover within the first 90 days of employment.”
