Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Dedication Saturday

A ceremony to dedicate the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at the Heritage Port in Wheeling will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Hershel “Woody” Williams, West Virginia’s only living Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, will be the featured speaker during the event. It was Williams’ idea to establish Gold Star monuments, honoring families who lost loved ones in the service of our country. At last count, 51 have been dedicated, with work in-progress on 64 others. 42 states have, or will have, Gold Star monuments. Wheeling resident John Nanny, who spearheaded the project locally, said its success was due to multiple donors who provided funding for the monument. Both city and county representatives will be present at the dedication.
