Former Buckeye Local Teacher Indicted on Charges
STEUBENVILLE – The Jefferson County grand jury on Wednesday returned indictments against a former Buckeye Local School District teacher and a Rayland-area mother who is charged with causing serious injuries to her infant child.
Ronald S. Burkhead, 41, of 3169 county Road 15, Rayland, a former Buckeye Local teacher, was indicted on four counts of sexual battery, three counts each of importuning and pandering obscenity and one count of gross sexual imposition.
The case involves three male teenagers, according to Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey Bruzzese.
Two of the victims engaged in sexual conduct with Burkhead and one victim exchanged messages and sexual photographs with Burkhead, he said.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said the department received a call from the mother of one of the victims, stating there had been sexual relations between her son and Burkhead.
The sheriff said the sexual relations have been going on since the child was about 13 years old. He said the alleged victim is now 17 years old.
Through the investigation, Abdalla said a second alleged victim was identified. He said that victim is 16 years old, and the sexual contact started this summer.
Both boys were interviewed by Abdalla and detectives at his office. Burkhead was then arrested and taken to the county jail, the sheriff said.
Abdalla said there is no evidence yet any of the sexual acts occurred on school property. He said the conduct was in Burkhead’s vehicle or home or a cemetery.
Abdalla said Burkhead has been targeting and grooming kids from a young age.
Bruzzese said Burkhead’s phone has been sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to determine if there is any child pornography on the device. Bruzzese said that process hasn’t been completed.
