Local Students With Ties to U.S. Marines Are Given $1,000 Scholarships

WHEELING – Three college students with local ties are recipients of 2020 Hershel “Woody” Williams Scholarship Foundation scholarships. Each receives $1,000.

Among the local awardees are:

Ryan Paul, who lives in Cave Creek, Arizona and is attending Paradise Valley Community College. He is Nanny’s grandson.

Ava Elizabeth Polinski of Moundsville, daughter of David and Rhonda Polinski, is attending West Virginia University. Her father is a member of the Marine Corps League.

According to Marine veteran and scholarship chairman John Nanny, to date, “The Foundation has awarded 134 scholarships totaling $116,000. It’s been a very good year for the Foundation. We had 15 applicants, with only one not meeting the deadline.”

Nanny, of Wheeling, has chaired the scholarship committee for the past 21 years. The three scholarship winners with local ties were sponsored by the Jones-Wolin & O’Brien Marine Corps League Det. 771, Wheeling.

Nanny said due to the current situation with the coronavirus and people not being able to assemble, an awards ceremony has not been held, but he hopes it can be rescheduled in May.
