Wheeling Residents Asked To Avoid Paying City Bills In Person

WHEELING — Wheeling residents who need to pay their water bills and parking tickets should avoid payment in person at the City-County Building, City Manager Robert Herron said.

As many as 80 people came to the City-County Building Monday to pay water bills, and officials want to reduce the number of people coming into the building, he said.

Herron asks residents to pay their water bills or parking ticket by mail or online at at www.municipalonlinepayments.com/wheelingwv.

“We’re strongly encouraging, starting today, that people mail in their water bills, mail in their taxes, mail in their parking tickets — whatever type of business they have with the city offices, try to do it online or through the mail. Public access to offices may be limited here in the very near future,” he said.

City services will continue in Wheeling, he said.

“We do have a new water shut-off policy. Those not paying their water bills will not immediately be shut off for non-payment,” according to Herron.

Residents still are responsible for paying those bills, he said.

City officials also are discouraging in-person meetings at the City-County Building — whether they are between employees, or between an employee and a member of the public, according to Herron. The online service Skype is being used in some cases, he said. There also will be no non-essential traveling by city employees.

Wheeling Municipal Court will not convene at least until April 10, and the city-owned Nelson-Jordan Center also is closed until further notice, according to Herron.

Some businesses in the Centre Market are voluntarily closing as city officials decide their next move for the city-owned retail and restaurant area.

“From a city perspective, we’re being cautious,” he said. “But we also want to be flexible. We will change our protocals as warranted.”
