Bridgeport Food Drive Is Friday, Saturday

BRIDGEPORT — In an effort to help provide food for residents in need, the Bridgeport Rotary Club will hold its annual food drive this weekend.

The 10th annual food drive is set for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Riesbeck’s in Bridgeport.

Riesbeck’s has partnered with the rotary club since 2011 to help with the effort. Steve Petrella, assistant manager of Riesbeck’s, said the store is happy to help the community in any way needed.

The grocery store will have bags of food, priced at $5 and $10, available for purchase during the event. Dick Riley, chairman of the event, said the rotary will be outside the store to accept the purchased items.

“People can buy the bags and then bring them out to us and we’ll take them to the (Bridgeport) food pantry,” he said. “We appreciate the community’s support in helping those in need.”

All of the food collected at the drive will benefit the Bridgeport Food Bank.

Kathy Frio, directory of the pantry, said more than 250 bags of food were collected during last year’s event, helping provide hundreds of local families with food items.

“The event helps us get through the winter,” she said.

Each family will be given one of the donated bags of food. Frio said individuals interested in receiving the items collected from the food bank must be a village resident and qualify by income.

Vicky Bland, past-president of the rotary, hopes the event will bring as many donations as in the previous year.

“We’re hoping to get the same amount or even beat it this year, she said.

Riley said the rotary is extremely grateful for Riesbeck’s continued partnership in the program.

“Riesbeck’s is always willing to work with the community. They have always been very generous,” he said.

Anyone interested in donating toward the event may do so between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. this weekend. Cash donations are also welcomed.
