Acuity Hospital Moving Bellaire Operation To Wheeling

BELLAIRE – An acute care medical operation still operating in the otherwise shuttered Belmont Community Hospital is moving to West Virginia.

Acuity Hospital, which has been renting space inside the former Bellaire facility, plans to move to the Wheeling Hospital campus. This is because the former BCH, which was closed by Wheeling Hospital two years ago, is up for sale.

Acuity already had an office at Wheeling Hospital; however, that office and now its Bellaire operation will move into the former Bishop Hodges Continuous Care building by year’s end.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with Acuity Health to consolidate their services onto the Wheeling Hospital campus. We value the relationship with them and look forward to many more years of partnership,” said Douglass Harrison, CEO of Wheeling Hospital.

Belmont Community Hospital’s services were stopped in April 2019 because of financial issues with operation of the facility, officials said when they announced the plan in January 2019.

While the hospital’s medical services, including an emergency room ceased to operate, Acuity Hospital continued to operate inside the building.

Before its closure, BCH, formerly Bellaire Hospital, had operated for 105 years. After its closure, Wheeling Hospital began offering many of the same services the Bellaire hospital had at its clinics, such as the ability to get X-rays and blood work done at labs.

The former Belmont Community Hospital is listed for sale by Paull Associates. Broker Lee Paull IV said the asking price is $2.4 million.

Janice Sable, income tax administrator for the village of Bellaire, said the village typically collects between $34,000 and $36,000 annually in income tax withholdings from Acuity employees. The village will not feel the impact of this loss until next year, however.

“It will definitely have an impact on us,” she said. “There will be a trickle-down effect.”

She added that when Belmont Community Hospital still was open, its employees provided $72,000 annually in income tax withholdings for the village.
