Wellsburg Bridge Is Taking Shape

More than two years after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Wellsburg Bridge, crews with the Flatiron Corporation of Broomfield, Colorado, continue constructing the piers and supporting structures for the bridge across the Ohio River between the Wellsburg area and Brilliant on Friday. The span, which will eventually extend 1,600 feet across the Ohio River, will include a massive 830-foot tied-arch span, which is being constructed along the shore a short distance upriver from where the piers are being constructed. The tied-arch span is scheduled to be transported down river on barges and hoisted into place onto the bridge piers by early spring, according to West Virginia Division of Highways District 6 Engineer Tony Clark While it it is still too early in the project to know whether the overall projected completion date for the bridge will be pushed back, the original completion date for the structure was set for late 2021. According to DOH officials, river traffic is scheduled to be shut down for a 72-hour period on that section of the river when the tied arch span is moved into place. An estimated weight of 4,000 tons, the tied-arch span is believed to be the heaviest structure to be lifted in such a way in the United States. The speed limit continues to be lowered to 40 miles per hour throughout the work zone just south of Wellsburg, as construction crews perform hillside retaining work to shore up the embankment where the bridge will eventually intersect with W.Va. 2.
