West Virginia Division of Highways Set To Begin Bear Rock Bridge Replacement in Ohio County
Those traveling on National Road through Valley Grove can expect changing traffic patterns and short delays as a small bridge referred to as the “Bear Rock Bridge” in Ohio County will be replaced in the coming months, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.
The DOH said that beginning Monday, March 15, the westbound lane of U.S. Route 40 will be closed in the vicinity of Valley Grove as part of the bridge replacement project.
Two-way traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of traffic signals, and that lane will have an 11 ft. width restriction.
DOH District 6 Engineer Tony Clark said local contractor Ohio-West Virginia Excavating will replace the structure, located adjacent to Valley Grove Road. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Clark said the job should be done by October.
One lane of traffic will stay open at that location with an alternating traffic signal and the contractor will move to the eastbound side of the structure following the replacement of the westbound side over the coming months.
Clark said the bridge replacement is part of a DOH plan to eventually replace three older weight-restricted bridges along National Road in the Valley Grove area under different contracts.
An Ohio-West Virginia Excavating crew was out at the bridge site Wednesday inspecting the older “spread-box beam” style bridge, which is showing signs of deterioration on the side concrete parapets and beams beneath the structure.
